Edwards and Gary O'Neil represent the initial candidates in the frame to succeed Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday after the squad's 10-match without a victory beginning to the Premier League season.

Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic associations to the club - are part of the options to be considered by the club leadership.

The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible obstacle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.

Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town head coach - who made more than 100 of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is said to be a strong candidate for the position.

The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the club directors as they start the process of hiring a new manager.

O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, although he would be a shock choice considering he was sacked by the club in the previous winter.

The ex- West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed meaning the club would not need to provide any buyout fee.
