Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became widely known.
Summers remarked in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have served, excited about the prospects of the organization, and eagerly await following their progress".
Summers, who previously headed Harvard University, declared on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released emails revealed that the economist exchanged messages with the financier until the eve of his 2019 detention for suspected human trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the AI firm expressed it respected the economist's decision to resign.
"We value his significant contributions and the perspective he brought to the Board," OpenAI stated.
Political Context
This announcement comes after both chambers of the legislative branch agreed on this week to approve a legislation that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its documents on Epstein.
The legislation will afterward head to the office of President Trump for signature. Trump has said he plans to sign the bill, after changing his position on the issue following pressure from his followers.
Message Details
A group of Epstein-related correspondence made public by the legislative panel last week referenced numerous high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without implying any illegal behavior by those figures.
The emails indicated that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to link Summers to prominent global figures.
Personal Response
After the emails were released with the public, he said he assumed "full responsibility for my misguided choice to persist in communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and mend bonds with the individuals nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The economist served in high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; functioning as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He presided over the university from the early 2000s and continues to be a academic there. When declaring his departure from public duties previously on this week, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in Washington where he was a researcher, verified that Summers was not connected with the group.
The former official joined the board of the AI company, which creates the language model, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its chief executive Sam Altman.
